Windows 7
Microsoft Windows 7 is finally out and the consensus is that it is a keeper. OK - it makes up for MS Vista's shortcomings but as a matter of fact MS Vista is (now) quite stable and respectable. Vista is probably doomed to extinction though with the release of Windows 7 pre-installed.
Big challenge for most folks is to decide if they want the 64-bit or the 32-bit flavor. Well, the decision is taken out of your hands if the computer comes pre-installed with the operating system flavor. If you do have a choice - and this may only happen if you are upgrading or doing a fresh install is to remember that 64-bit versions of device drivers are still in development and may not be widely available for certain - usually legacy - devices. So opt for the 32-bit OS for now - unless you need to go beyond 4GB of memory.
Many business users have requested that their systems be downgraded (upgraded...) from Vista to XP - and there are very strong reasons why they do so. Windows XP is still the operating system du-jour for all around compatibility. The majority of legacy devices have all had their drivers written to the XP spec, and business users simply want to get the job done with minimal (if any) technical support intervention from the IT Support department - if there is one. -
Windows Vista
The Windows Vista camp is sharply divided on the benefits and shortcomings of this operating system (OS) and in reality the reason is one of marketing. Vista is a huge departure from XP in terms of design and target market. At the time of it's release Vista support was not able to keep up with the pace of the introduction of this operating system. Now that the market is more mature and a number of service packs have gone through, Vista is now a viable mainstream system. Certain system vendors will still offer Vista - and XP as an alternate choice - on first boot-up. There is no reason to discredit a system with Vista pre-installed at this time. Both Windows 7 and Vista use a real-time update process to get current and/or missing drivers from the internet. -
Linux and other Operating Systems
There is still a place for Linux and other operating systems in the marketplace. However, despite the surge of interst in alternate systems, these systems remain the specialty of technology groups or users with well defined and modest needs. An operating system is only one part of the user requirement. In and of itself an operating system needs applications to make it all come together. There are thousands of applications available for Linux based systems - each has their own way of doing things, and in fact the Sun Microsystems Office Suite is a worthy contender for many users. The Sun Office Suite offers almost full file level compatibility with the Microsoft Office Suite. Unfortunately you cannot easily take a Microsoft Office user and put them in front of a Linux / Sun Office Suite without some retraining. Close, very close though. And of course the big dealmaker is that Linux based operating systems and applications, are for the most part, free to use thanks to a large host of dedicated systems programmers and users that have made this posssible.
